After looking at my previous posts, they all look a bit biased on a certain look, so in the interest of balance, im bringing some heavyweight culture up in here...VELAZQUEZ...

Been re-falling back in love with Miruki Kawais work...i never went off it, but like a great album or film, you occasionally get distracted by new, exciting things, and then all of a sudden you 'rediscover' it and your like 'oh shit!' and feel like a bad parent who has neglected their kids...or something!
Anyway, i looked on youtube to find the vbs art talk with her ( always crashes my internet)..and all i could find was this clip...its like polar opposites to me, a reason i love her art - pure bright, inventive fun, but its grimly contrasted with the typical stupid, over analysing art critic who spoils it all with her stupid inane commentary (i.e artcritic bullshit waffle) - although if my work was compared on youtube to something Beavis and Butthead would do, i would be quite happy

As a kid, Mad magazine was one of my biggest influences, and the highlight for me was always the genius of Al Jaffees AWESOME fold-ins at the back (close second - Sergio Aragones small doodle strips between panels..but i deviate!)...Every time i got a new issue - straight to the back and fold that cover good...and everytime it blew my tiny pathetic mind!!! i was a magician, yet still just a kid...even though it was a dumb one page from mad magazine, it was pure gold to me and i still think they rule hard! So it put a smile on my face when the NY times paid a little salute to them with a historic look back via a bit of internet multimedia magic of their own...HERE

also check the Beck homage to the mad fold in...

PS cool thing from Wikipedia "In 2006, Stephen Colbert saluted Jaffee's 85th birthday with a "fold-in" birthday cake; after the center slice was removed, the remainder spelled out the message "AL, YOU ARE OLD."...chortle!

Whenever you hear the name 'Picturebox' its always used with something awesome, and it also makes you instantly reach for your wallet because if you know if its from the Picturebox, its a must buy...anyway, new stuff has dropped on their website that you really really really REALLY should have! What? i hear you mutter? well a new paper rad comic, a new taylor mickimens comic AND GARY PANTER DEFINITIVE BOOK!!! FUCK YEAH!

All round dude Austin from NEW Studios has dropped his newest and bestest made (6 colours and silver dust! oh my!) if your in the mood to get some reggae reggae up in your the LINK

FUCK YOUGuillermo Vargas Habacuc!

Art is awesome because it can be so many things to so many people. Often UK tabloid papers destroy modern art when the turner prize is announced...bemoaning that anything other than a canvas depicting a bowl of fruit or a horse is NOT ART..and of course this is wrong, art is many many things to many many people. I dont get some art, but then i know it is still valid to those that enjoy it, in the same way i know art that i enjoy doesnt define or relate to 'art' for other people ....BUT there are still sometimes, only rarely however, when something is presented as art, and is just i know this is a moral side i am taking but this is my blog and i feel this is very very wrong...even if in theory it could be art, i still feel there is no place in this world for this to be happnening....what am i talking about? well over on the arkitip intelligence blogs, Damon Ways recent post highlighted something that i urge you to help stop.
I will copy and paste what Damon Way said....
"Fuck This Guy!!!
Can you believe this crap… In 2007, the ‘artist’ Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, took a dog from the street, tied him to a rope in an art gallery, and starved him to death. For several days, the ‘artist’ and the visitors of the exhibition have watched emotionless the shameful ‘masterpiece’ based on the dog’s agony, until eventually he died. But this is not all… the prestigious Visual Arts Biennial of the Central American decided that the ‘installation’ was actually art, so that Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has been invited to repeat his cruel action for the biennial of 2008. I am hitting this ceiling with this… boycott this scumbag and do your part to stop it…"

If your in central London and fancy seeing a great photo exhibition, i recommend the awesome I CANT BELIEVE A GIRLS PLAYING ME METALLICA by Valerie Phillips.
The name alone should guarantee your attendance, but what is the show? Its a show to accompany the release of the book 'I can't believe a girls playing me metallica'... and its a great collection of images that really portrays the fun and friendship between the photographer and the muse... sometimes, this kind of show feels a bit cliquey (like your an unwanted gatecrasher) or forced (like a mcginley wannabe), but here its spot on and leaves the viewer with a grin and a zest for life to go out and have some fun of your own and hang with your friends (although i might leave the spock ears out)...its rad, and you should go!
Its at the cornell spaceship gallery 3-4a little portland st, w1.

Paul Ashley Brown = A rising comic star...

I hate being shit. Paul Ashley Brown sent me an envelope with 2 comics a few weeks ago, and ive been so busy (and also at the same time slack) that I never got to post this sooner - so im really really sorry Paul! But Dilly reading world... if you like comics, this guy is really amazing!!!
Both comics below are available from Paul at you really should get your hands on these comics!
First up is Browner Knowle number one (Black and white photocopied)
This is his observations of his local neighbourhood and the cast that live there. The people and backdrops could be anywhere urban on this dirty planet, but it also feels very english...but perhaps thats just me! The observations of characters are extremly well written and spot on, both truthful, funny and moving, and the written accounts are accompanied by his fantastic illustrations. I really really loved this comic, it was something i read and re-read, and for a change the text was awesome, as were the illustrations, and they both worked very well together. If you have £4, email Paul for a really is worth it!

The second zine he graciously included was called SUM YO-YO STUFF which took me a while to get my head round...why? it is a hand bound (with cool string) collection of his hand drawn illustrations...thats right, you get a bunch of original artwork!!! Serious, to get such a lot of lovely illustrations hand watercoloured or pencilled...well fuck me!!! thats gotta be worth the £6 asking price!!!! each one is different (obviously) but i was lucky enough to get my two favourite subjects in my copy - a naked lady and a fanatical muslim - AWESOME!!!! again, hit up Paul if you want a copy, but these are obv. mad mad limited
